SUGAR LAND, TEXAS- The Sugar Land Skeeters wrapped up the Spring Training slate with a perfect 5-0 record, thanks to a 3-1 win on a beautiful Tuesday night at Constellation Field. Derek Blacksher picked up the win, throwing a perfect sixth inning while Roy Merritt earned the save by striking out a pair in the top of the ninth. Austin Eichman was saddled with the loss for the Pioneers.

Shortstop Beamer Weems paced the offense with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored. The Baylor alum led the team in the preseason with a blistering .625 average. Dan Meadows got the start, going three innings, yielding one hit and one walk while striking out three.

The Skeeters cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second after Eichman plunked Kevin Russo with one out. Edwin Gomez continued his hot preseason with a double down the right field line, allowing Russo to score standing up from first and stake Sugar Land a 1-0 lead.

The hometown team increased the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Weems led off the frame with a single into left. Brooks Conrad pulled a one-out pitch to the right side before Delwyn Young reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Travis Scott just missed a grand slam, flying out to the warning track in right, allowing Weems to score on the sacrifice fly. Sugar Land couldn't pad the cushion further as Young was picked off at first base.

Fireworks flew in the bottom of the sixth as Denny Almonte took the first offering from Kyle Craft over the wall in right for a solo home run and increase the lead to 3-0 for the Skeeters.

The Skeeters open up 2015 on Thursday, April 23, against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Season tickets and special game plans are still available for the 2015 campaign. Sign up today by calling the box office at 281-240-4487 to join the swarm.
