Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped the series-opener to Long Island in a 9-8 slugfest with the Ducks at Bethpage Ballpark. The loss drops the Skeeters to 62-68 on the year with nine games to play in the regular season.

Skeeters starter Miguel Martinez got roughed up in his second outing of the year with Sugar Land. The southpaw allowed six runs, but only two were earned, on eight hits with no walks and a strikeout over 3.0 innings of work.

The Ducks struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Fehlandt Lentini reached on a leadoff error by shortstop Amadeo Zazueta and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. In his first game back with the Ducks, Lew Ford knocked a single into center to score Lentini and break the scoring seal. Randy Ruiz followed with a ground-rule double to put a pair in scoring position before Sean Burroughs singled through the right-side of the infield to increase the lead to 3-0.

Patrick Palmeiro launched a ball into orbit to trim the gap to 3-1 in the top of the second. The long ball by the third baseman matched a career-high for a single season with 10.

Long Island would go on to put up another three-spot in the bottom of the third, but a six-run fourth inning gave the Skeeters their first lead of the night. Jeff Dominguez cleared the bases with two outs on a three-run double to open the scoring in the frame. Delwyn Young and Chris Wallace followed with an RBI double and single, respectively, to tie the game before Wallace would eventually come home on a wild pitch.

After the Ducks put up their third, three-run inning of the game, Travis Scott extended his lead in the Skeeters all-time record book with a solo shot in the top of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, the Skeeters put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Kevin Russo worked a two-out walk to extend the game and Denny Almonte recorded a pinch-hit single to put the go-ahead run aboard. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to move into scoring position, Johan Limonta was issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Willy Taveras flew out to right to end the night, stranding the bases loaded.
