Sixers Play Third Consecutive Extra-Inning Game, Fall to Storm

Lake Elsinore, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino went to extra innings for its third consecutive game but after winning on Thursday at Rancho Cucamonga, the Sixers fell for the second straight night of extra curriculars at Lake Elsinore; the 66ers fell to the Storm 4-3 on Saturday in ten innings. The 66ers dropped to 7-7 in extra-inning games in 2019 as Esteury Ruiz' sac fly knocked home Jalen Washington to give Lake Elsinore (54-51, 19-18) its second straight celebratory walk off against Inland Empire.

The 66ers (39-67, 13-24) got a strong pitching performance from starter Travis Herrin. After lasting just 1.2 IP in his previous start, the Lebanon, Indiana native allowed three runs, two earned with two walks and four Ks. Angels Catcher Jonathan Lucroy, with the Sixers on an MLB Injury Rehab, went 0-for-4 at the plate but aided Herring to a career-best seven innings of work and did so on just 77 pitches in a no-decision. Zane Gurwitz starred at the plate for Inland Empire as the University of Texas product had three hits including a double. In his three games since being transferred from Double-A Mobile, Gurwitz had had multi-hit games in all three with three two-baggers. The Quakes broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Gabriel Arias, his 11th of the year and second in two days. Inland Empire tied the game, however, in the ninth when Mike Stefanic walked and moved to third on Devin Davis' single. With two down, Gleyvin Pineda line a singled into left-center and tied the game 3-3 and extended his hit streak to a season-best eight games. The Sixers failed to score in the top of the tenth and the Storm won it in the ninth when Ruiz' sac fly did the trick. Jordan Guerrero (2-3) earned a win for the second night in a row as the loss went to IE righty James Varela.
