Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino had to hang against a furious ninth-inning comeback for the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night but earned their first road win of the year with a 3-2 victory. The 66ers improved to 2-4 against the Storm on the year.
Inland Empire loaded the bases in the first against Storm starter Mason Thompson (0-1) and scratched a run across on Kevin Williams Jr.'s hard smash infield single for a 1-0 lead. The 66ers (5-4) loaded the bases against Thomspon again in the fourth and Lake Elsinore (6-3) went to the pen to southpaw Travis Radke. The lefty got ahead of Sixers' batter Orlando Martinez 0-2 but Martinez lashed a clutch two-out, two-strike single up the box for two-RBI and a 3-0 advantage. The 66ers trio of Chris Rodriguez, Brett Hanewich and Andrew Wantz (2-0) held the Storm scoreless until the ninth. Wantz got a pop out to open the inning but a double and single put runners at the corners and chased Wantz. Jorge Tavarez entered for IE and gave up a line shot to right that Williams made a spectacular diving play on in the gap and held the play to a run scoring sac fly for Kelvin Melean. Tavarez (SV,2) then allowed two consecutive singles to make it 3-2 and put the runners at second and third with a wild pitch. The righty escaped however by locking up Storm batter Tirso Ornelas looking on a breaking ball for a called strike three and a Sixers win.
The series at Lake Elsinore continues Saturday at 6:00 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
