Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers downed the Lake Elsinore Storm 8-7 in ten innings at San Manuel Stadium on Sunday when pinch runner David Fletcher scored from third on a botched bunt defense. The win gave the Sixers a three-games-to-one series win over the Storm and was highlighted by three-hit games from Jeff Boehm and Hutton Moyer for the victors.
After Lake Elsinore (53-54, 21-16) took a 2-0 lead in the first but the Sixers cut that deficit in half in the bottom of the inning when Hutton Moyer lifted a solo shot to right field. It was Moyer's 9th homer of the season. The Sixers then unloaded on Storm starter Zech Lemond in the second scoring five runs on six hits including Jared Foster's second homer of the year. Inland Empire also got triples from Michael Hermosillo and Moyer in the frame. Boehm doubled while Zach Houchins and Ayendy Perez contributed singles to build a 6-2 lead. Inland Empire tacked on a run in the third on Perez' second RBI single of the day giving Inland Empire (36-71, 13-24) a 7-2 advantage.
The Storm chipped away eventually cutting the lead to 7-6 in the sixth inning. The bullpen work of Ben Paullus (3.2 IP, 0R) and Trey Wingenter (2.0 IP, 0R) kept the Sixers in check. The 66ers got two innings of scoreless work from Kevin Grendell who allowed just a walk and fanned four. With one out in the top of the ninth however, Storm 3B Ty France launched a solo shot off IE reliever Winston Lavendier to tie the game and eventually to a tenth inning.
In the bottom of the tenth Jeff Boehm led off with a double to right against Storm reliever Phil Maton (1-1). It was Boehm's second double of the game and third hit. He was pinch run for by David Fletcher. Roberto Baldoquin, who had two singles with a walk and a sac bunt already on the day, laid down another sacrifice bunt to move Fletcher up. The bunt was fielded by Maton but second baseman Daniel Bravo covering first could not handle the throw and the ball kicked away for an error allowing Fletcher to scamper home with the winning run. Lavendier was credited with the win to move to 1-0.
The 66ers open a series versus High Desert Monday at 7:05pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
