Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports were held to just a single hit on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Visalia Rawhide scored a run in each of the first two innings and their pitching staff retired 17 batters in a row to close out the game as the Rawhide handed the Ports a 2-0 loss and earned a split of the four-game series.
Visalia opened the scoring in the top of the first. Colin Bray and Victor Reyes drew back-to-back walks to open the frame. With two outs in the inning, Grant Heyman singled to right to score Bray and give the Rawhide a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Michael Perez doubled to start the inning and scored on a two-out double by Bray to give the Rawhide a 2-0 advantage.
Ports starter Mike Murray (1-2) would go 4.1 innings and allow just the two runs on five this while walking four and striking out four in a losing effort.
Visalia starter Alex Young (1-3) pitched around a one-out walk in the second and a two-out walk in the third. Young issued a leadoff walk to Melvin Mercedes in the fourth and, two batters later, gave up a single to Joe Bennie that put two aboard. Young would go on to get Sandber Pimentel to strike out and John Nogowski to pop out to the infield to escape his only jam of the night.
Young would earn his first California League win, going six shutout innings and allowing one hit while walking three and striking out a season-high eight.
After Bennie's single in the fourth, Visalia pitching combined to retire the final 17 batters in succession. Young retired eight straight and Nick Baker, Gabriel Moya and Cameron Gann (SV, 3) each tossed three perfect innings, with Gann picking up his third save of the season.
Stockton's bullpen was also terrific. Joey Wagman took over for Murray with two on and one out and would go on to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings and finish his outing having struck out his final six batters in-a-row and setting down eight straight overall. Carlos Navas pitched around two hits allowed in the ninth to keep it a two-run deficit for Stockton.
Bennie's single in the fourth, Stockton's lone hit of the night, extended his hit streak to 16 games. It marked the only time this season the Ports have been held to one hit. Stockton's previous low for hits in a game was three, which happened three times this season all on the road.
After splitting a four-game set with Visalia, the Ports welcome the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to town for a three-game series on Monday night. Brett Graves (5-8, 5.11 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by Quakes left-hander Michael Boyle (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
