Six Run Third Does In El Paso

May 23, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pelicans welcomed El Paso to the CBL and to Pensacola with a 12-1 victory tonight. Pensacola used another strong pitching performance and three homeruns to secure their victory.

Pelicans starter Byron Batson improved to 3-1 on the season after he threw seven innings while giving up six hits and only one run. Batson gave way to Marc Major and Bubba Dobson to finish off the Diablos.

In the 2nd inning, Nestor Smith got things started with a single up the middle. Larry Bethea then hit his 4th homer of the season, a towering shot over the left-center field wall making the score 2-0.

Pelicans looked to go three up three down in the third before they pulled off an impressive six run two out rally. Joe Espada and Juan Rocha started things off with back-to-back doubles, which scored Espada. Jose Salas followed with an RBI single that scored Rocha. Nestor Smith was hit by a pitch and Bethea walked loading the bases for George Branch. Branch quickly put the game out of reach as he turned a Chris Flanagan fastball around for a grand slam, his second of the season and third homer of the season.

Pensacola wasn't done as they added one more in the 5th thanks to Bethea's RBI single that scored Jose Salas who singled. In the 6th, Joe Espada hit his 1st homerun of the season, a three-run shot that scored Bernard Caston and Carlos Mendoza.

El Paso got their lone run in the 4th inning when Carlos Sepulveda doubled down the right field line. Alejandro Fernandez then hit a dribbler that just made it up the middle scoring Sepulveda.

The same two teams face off tomorrow night with Jeff Norris on the mound for the Pelicans.
