
Six-run sixth sends Colts past WhiteWings

San Angelo - Already up 6-5, the San Angelo Colts erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 12-5 tonight at Foster Field.
Ryan Dixon (1-2) started the sixth by hitting Ronnie Gaines, giving up a single to Jason Landreth and hitting Hunter Jobes to load the bases. Josh Collazo hit a two-run single and Stephen Derrick hit an RBI- single to knock out Dixon. Todd Lutz came in and got Butch Ballez to ground into a fielder's choice, erasing Collazo. Hank Lanto was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Bradley Goldsmith hit an RBI-single, Jason Diaz hit a sacrifice and Gaines hit an RBI-single to cap the inning.
Caleb Rodgers pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his first save.
The WhiteWings (13-17) got on the board against Ezequiel Astacio (4-0) right away. With one out in the top of the first, Joaquin Rodriguez and Jonathan Poterson walked. Brian Nichols and Alberto Cruz followed with RBI-singles, moving Nichols to third. Welinson Baez grounded out to score Nichols, making it 3-0.
The Colts (21-9) responded against Maximino de la Cruz in the bottom of the second. Collazo hit a leadoff double and Derrick reached on a single. Ballez followed with his second home run of the season. Two outs later, Diaz reached on an infield single, moved to second on a Gaines single and scored on a Landreth single to make it 4-3.
Nichols and Cruz hit back-to-back home runs in the third to give the WhiteWings a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth Dixon hit Lanto with a pitch and Goldsmith reached on a fielder's choice. Diaz reached on a seven-pitch walk. Gaines hit an RBI-single. After Diaz stole third, Landreth hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Diaz to make it 6-5 Colts.
The WhiteWings and Colts play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 5:05 at Foster Field. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (3-2) will face right-hander Brian Henschel (4-1).
The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo.
