
Colts erupt in sixth, win fourth straight

San Angelo, Texas--- It was a six run sixth inning that propelled the Colts to their fourth straight win as San Angelo (21-9) defeated the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (13-17) with a final score of 12-5.
In the top of the first the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings collected two walks and two singles which plated three runs as they took the lead early in the contest.
As the Colts trailed 3-0 in the bottom half of the third, Josh Collazo and Stephen Derrick began the inning with a double and a single. With runners at the corners, Short stop Butch Ballez hit a towering fly ball to left field which drifted over the head of Whitewings outfielder Jonathan Poterson and fell in the Colts bullpen for a three run homerun. Ballez second homer of the year knotted the game at three. The Colts got one more run in the inning as Jason Diaz and Ronnie Gaines singled. Jason Landreth brought home Diaz with a missile back up the middle, Colts led by a run.
In the Third, Rio Grande Valley's Brian Nichols and Alberto Cruz delivered back to back homeruns as the Whitewings regained the lead 5-4.
To the bottom of the fourth, Hank Lanto led the inning off with a hit by pitch. A batter later Jason Diaz walked and Ronnie Gaines followed with a single scoring Lanto as the Colts tied the game at five. After Diaz swiped his fourteenth stolen base of the season putting him at third base, Landreth grounded into a fielders choice scoring Diaz, pushing San Angelo's lead to two.
The Colts offense struck again in the sixth. Gaines and Landreth reached consecutively from a hit by pitch and a single. Another hit by pitch to Hunter Jobes loaded the bases for Josh Collazo. The Colts first baseman jumped on the first pitch he saw lining it to left center field for a single scoring Gaines and Landreth, stretching San Angelo's lead to two runs. Stephen Derrick followed suit with a single scoring Jobes, it became an 8-5 game. The Colts continued to add on in the sixth striking three more singles, another hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly making it a six run inning. San Angelo completed the inning with a 12-5 lead. The Whitewings did not respond with a single run the rest of the contest.
Ezequiel Astacio (4-0) remained perfect on the season as he worked five innings allowing five earned runs while striking out three. Caleb Rodgers (1) earned his first save of the season working the final three innings of the game. Rodgers struck out two and did not allow a run.
Eighteen hits and twelve runs was the production the Colts offense put forth. Ronnie Gaines went 5-5 on five singles adding a run scored and two RBI's. In his Colts debut, Stephen Derrick collected three hits, including a single and a double with an RBI and two runs scored. Josh Collazo continues his hot streak since joining the Colts with a double and a single, two RBI's and a run scored.
