Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT . - The Bridgeport Bluefish scored six times in the bottom of the 6th inning to break a 5-5 tie and cruised from there to a 13-5 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the series opener at Harbor Yard. The loss drops the Blue Crabs to 0-2 in the second half of the Atlantic League season.
Bridgeport compiled four hits, four walks and sent 11 batters to the plate in their six-run 6th. Luis Rodriguez broke the tie score with a two-run double for the only multi-run hit of the frame. The Bluefish got an RBI single from Mike Richard as well as consecutive bases-loaded walks before All-Star catcher J.R. Towles provided the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
D.J. Mitchell (4-5) went eight innings for the victory allowing five runs on 11 hits. Daryl Thompson (1-3) was on the losing end for the Blue Crabs as he gave up nine runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Three of the seven hits were home runs.
In his first at bat as a Blue Crab, Addison Maruszak homered in the top of the 1st inning to give Southern Maryland the lead. It was short lived however as Towles hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the 1st, his eighth of the season.
Prentice Redman hit the second home run of the night in the 3rd inning with James Simmons on base to push the Bluefish lead to 4-1.
Southern Maryland were able to tie the game briefly in the top of the 4th. C.J. Ziegler hit an RBI double for the first run of the inning and after a Bobby Stevens run-scoring single, Jermaine Mitchell tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI triple. Luis Lopez gave the lead right back to Bridgeport in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run, his fourth of the year.
Jake Opitz tied the game for a final time in the top of the 5th as he singled home Steve Moss for his only RBI of the night. Opitz finished the game with three hits, one of two Blue Crabs to accomplish that feat.
The Blue Crabs continue their series with the Bridgeport Bluefish tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Southern Maryland will be back in town for a four-game series against the Camden Riversharks beginning Thursday night at 7:05 pm.
