Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - The San Jose Giants (42-36, 3-6) used two three-run home runs in the seventh inning to turn a one run deficit into a five run lead and cruised to a 10-5 victory over the Visalia Rawhide (50-30, 4-5) at Recreation Ballpark on Friday night.
LHP Gabe Speier entered the game in the seventh with two on for San Jose and one out and after retiring the first man he faced for the second out, RF Dylan Davis hit his second home run in as many days, a three run shot that gave San Jose a 7-5 lead. 1B Jonah Arenado, who homered earlier in the ballgame, doubled and 3B Jose Vizcaino Jr. walked before DH Daniel Carbonell connected for the second three-run home run of the inning and turned it into a 10-5 win for San Jose.
San Jose jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against LHP Cody Reed after a walk to CF Ronnie Jebavy and then a two base error on a dropped pop-up in the top of the first.
Visalia, against RHP Jason Forjet (8-5, 4.38), in the bottom of the second snatched the lead when LF Chuck Taylor slapped a two-run double down the left field line scoring both 3B Dawel Lugo and C Tyler Baker for a 2-1 advantage. RF Victor Reyes followed with an RBI triple to make it 3-1 Rawhide.
The third inning proved to be just as kind to Visalia when again with two outs DH Stryker Trahan reached on infield bunt single. 2B Henry Castillo drove him in with his California League leading 25th double and then Lugo drove in Castillo with a single to make it 5-1.
The offense for Visalia ended there as Forjet allowed three singles over his final four innings and earned the win. He finished with seven innings on the mound, five runs allowed (two earned) on nine hits and six strikeouts without issuing a walk.
San Jose went on to score nine unanswered runs in the ball game starting with two in the fourth against Reed. Arenado homered and then Vizcaino Jr. doubled, moved to third on a fly out by Carbonell and scored on C Ty Ross's sacrifice fly to make it 5-3 Visalia.
In the fifth, Reed's final inning, San Jose got another run by virtue of a Jebavy single, a stolen base and throwing error and an RBI groundout by Davis to cut it to a 5-4 game.
Reed finished with five innings pitched, four runs (two earned) on five hits, issuing one walk and striking out two.
RHP Nick Baker (3-1, 2.76) came in and threw a scoreless sixth and began the seventh, allowing a bunt single to SS Richard Rodriguez and a single to Jebavy before being lifted for Speier.
Baker's two base runners were cashed in on the Davis three-run home run and he took the loss after pitching just an inning a third and allowing two runs (earned) on two hits and a walk. For Baker it was the first loss he has taken as a decision since April 30th, 2015, a span of 54 appearances.
The second three-run home run ensued and 10-5 was the final. LHP Gabriel Moya threw two scoreless innings to finish it out for Visalia and RHP Jeff Soptic did the same for San Jose.
The Rawhide are now 9-5 against San Jose this season including 6-2 at Recreation Ballpark against their North Division rival. Tomorrow night in game three of the series the Rawhide will send RHP Brad Keller (6-4, 4.19) to the mound against RHP Jordan Johnson (5-6, 4.50) of San Jose. First pitch at 7:00 p.m. and it's an All-American Saturday presented by Budweiser and Heroes Night.
