Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Amarillo Sox swept the Worcester Tornadoes in the four-game series with a 14-3 win at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium Friday night. For the fourth time in six days, the Tornadoes allowed five runs or more in the seventh inning.

The Tornadoes took the first lead of the game with a Johnny Welch single. Welch plated Brendon Kelliher, but was thrown out at second base to end the top of the first.

A four-run fourth put the Sox on top for good, as Jason White, Mitch Tucker, Adam Buschini and Alberto Espinosa all came in to score.

Amarillo added another three runs in the fifth inning. Tim Alberts cleared the loaded bases with a double, scoring White, Tucker and Jake Opitz.

Worcester added another run in its half of the seventh inning, as Johnny Welch hit a solo home run.

The six-run seventh for Amarillo featured a two-RBI double for Espinosa, a three-run homer for Garrett Rau and an RBI single for White.

The Sox added another run in the bottom of the eighth from an Alberts homer.

Jack Spradlin earned the victory for the home team, tossing seven innings. He gave up four hits and two runs, while walking none and striking out four. Derek Christensen pitched the eighth, holding the Tornadoes scoreless with a strikeout. Andrew Bowman began the ninth inning against Worcester but retired only one batter, walking Alex Trezza with the bases loaded. Trent Lare relieved him, but not before Nick Salotti knocked another two runs in with a bases-full single. A Chris Torres single scored Trezza to close the book on Bowman (four runs allowed).

Ryan Brockett reached on an error by Rau to score another pair of Worcester runs, but that was all Worcester could muster in a six-run frame.

Kevin Cooper was issued the loss, giving up seven runs on six hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out three Sox hitters in the defeat. Bryan Leigh and Mike Mullen combined for two innings of relief, allowing six runs. Tony Patane gave up one run in his inning of work.

The Tornadoes will be back in action on Saturday night in El Paso for a 8:05pm EST start time against the Diablos. Phil Negus-- the only starter not to appear in the Amarillo series-- will get the start for the 'Nadoes.
