
Six Run Second Sinks Snakes

The Calgary Vipers gave up six runs in the second inning and never recovered losing 11-8 to the Edmonton Capitals before 2810 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers went up 1-0 before the outburst from the Capitals and found themselves trailing 11-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth where they went on to score six unanswered runs but for the second straight night fell three runs short. With the loss the Snakes are 21-12 in the second half and 47-25 overall but maintain the best record in the Golden Baseball League.
Out of the bullpen Brian Oliver, Pete Sikaras, and Mac Suzuki all threw scoreless innings for the Vipers with Sikaras and Suzuki striking out two and not allowing a hit in their frames. Erik Dessau (8-5) took the loss giving up eight earned runs in three and two-third innings. Lou Pote (9-3) received the win throwing six innings and giving up four runs while Jason Pearson (14) earned the save with a one-two-three ninth inning including two strikeouts.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Nelson Castro walked, advanced to second base on a Sergio Pedroza groundout, and scored on a clutch two-out single from Kit Pellow for a 1-0 lead.
Edmonton responded in a big way in the next half inning as Joey Gomes was hit by a pitch, Chad Ehrnsberger and Joe Jiannetti singled to load the bases, Aaron Hornostaj doubled in two runs, Matt Ceriani hit a three-run homer, Jorge Cortes reached on a throwing error, and Kevin House delivered a run batted in single for a 6-1 advantage.
Jose Morban added a run to the Capitals lead in the third inning with a solo home run to make the score 7-1.
The Edmonton onslaught continued in the fourth frame as Cortes, House, Darryl Brinkley, and Gomes hit consecutive singles for two runs and a 9-1 lead.
Another run was added to the Capitals lead in the fifth inning as Hornostaj walked, Ceriani singled, and Cortes knocked in a run with a base hit for a 10-1 advantage.
The Vipers got a run back in the bottom of the frame for a 10-2 score as Fehlandt Lentini singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a Castro base hit, and scored with a Pedroza sacrifice fly.
Right back answered Edmonton with a tally in the top of the sixth inning as Brinkley singled, took second base on defensive indifference, moved to third on an error, and scored on a Morban sacrifice fly for a 11-2 lead.
Calgary got two runs in the home half of the sixth as Colin Moro and Drew Miller singled, Jorge Mejia drove in a run with a base hit, Lentini singled to load the bases, and Castro walked for a RBI and a 11-4 game.
In the bottom of the eight the Snakes got a little closer as Rick Guarno, Kevin Price, and Mejia all walked to load the bases, Lentini hit a sacrifice fly, and Pedroza lined a three-run long ball to dead centerfield for his 18th home run of the season and a 11-8 score.
This series concludes on Thursday August 27th at 7:05 PM MDT as the Vipers play their final regular season home game of the year with Joe Sergent (6-3, 3.73) on the mound against Jose Lima (6-6, 3.59).
The Vipers will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series against the Edmonton Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium. Games 1 & 2 of this series will be in Edmonton on Tuesday September 1st and Wednesday September 2nd with both games at 7:05 PM MDT.
