Six Devil Rays named to all-star team; Brignac, Leandro will start

BATTLE CREEK, Mich.- Rosters for the 2005 Midwest League All-Star Game to be held in Peoria, IL on June 21, 2005 were announced by the league on Tuesday and the Devil Rays have a total of six players selected to the team. SS Reid Brignac, LF Francisco Leandro, C John Jaso, RHP Andy Sonnanstine, RHP Calvin Carpenter and LHP James Houser will represent the Devil Rays in the game.

Brignac and Leandro have been selected as starters at shortstop and outfield respectively. Brignac is hitting .239 with six home runs and 27 RBI on the season through 56 team games. Leandro has been at the top of nearly every offensive category at some point during the season. He is hitting .335 with 19 doubles, 31 RBI, 32 walks, eight steals and has 61 hits.

The other position player selected to the squad, John Jaso, leads the Devil Rays with 10 home runs. Jaso has a .341 average, 12 doubles and a .595 slugging percentage. The remaning three all-stars are pitchers beginning with right-handed starter Andy Sonnanstine. Sonnanstine has a 4-3 record, along with an ERA of 2.70 in 11 starts covering 70 innings. He has surrendered only 60 hits and seven walks while notching 63 strikeouts.

Left-handed starter James Houser is 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA in 11 starts. He has pitched 60 innings, 47 hits, 15 walks and 51 strikeouts. Opponents have hit just .217 against Houser. Right-hander Calvin Carpenter is the only Devil Rays reliever selected to the All-Star game. Carpenter is 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 16 games. Carpenter's opponents have hit only .175 off him as well as striking out 35 times in 28 1/3 innings.
