Rockford RiverHawks News Release

GARY, Ind. - Randall Simon and Patrick O'Sullivan hit home runs on Sunday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats, 7-4, at U.S. Steel Yard.

Simon and O'Sullivan broke a scoreless tie with back-to-back home runs off Gary starter Ryan Zink in the second inning. Simon homered to right field, his seventh of the year. O'Sullivan battled Zink for 10 pitches and drove a 3-2 pitch beyond left field and out of the stadium for his sixth homer.

The RiverHawks took two of three games from the RailCats in the weekend series. Rockford has won six of eight games since Gary swept the last series between the teams. In that span, Simon has hit five homers and O'Sullivan has homered four times.

The RiverHawks never trailed. They picked up two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Kevin House, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Jason James.

Rockford starter Kyle Ruwe gave up four runs - two on back-to-back, two-out, two-strike RBI singles by Mike Massaro and Tanner Townsend in the third inning - but earned his first win of the year. Ruwe (1-4), who gave up seven hits and struck out three without a walk, snapped a four-start losing streak.

The Rockford bullpen combined for three scoreless innings, but had to quiet Gary scoring threats in the seventh and eighth innings. Closer Scott Roehl recorded the last four outs and earned his eighth save.

Zink (1-3) gave up five runs, three earned, in six innings and took the loss.

The RiverHawks are home at 6:05 p.m. Monday to finish a suspended game against Fargo-Moorhead and then play the regularly scheduled game. It's the WIFR-Channel 23 Buyout Night.
