Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL - Kevin West's two run double in the seventh broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes (17-12) a 6-4 victory Sunday afternoon over the Joliet JackHammers (14-14) at Silver Cross Field. Joliet finished up their six game home stand at 3-3, taking two of three from Winnipeg.

Aharon Eggleston started the seventh inning with a leadoff walk against Michael Rocco (2-1) and moved up to third on a Juan Diaz single. West followed with a double to centerfield, just beyond the reach of a diving Jonathan Wyatt, to put the Goldeyes up for good at 6-4.

The JackHammers just tied the game up at four with two runs in the sixth off Stephen Flake (2-1). Brad Correll singled and scored on a Kevin Rios double, avoiding the tag attempt by catcher Brett Wallace. Rios took third on the throw home and would score on a Jon Nelson single to tie the game at four.

Joliet was fighting from behind all day after Winnipeg began the contest with three tallies in the first. Luis Alen drove a Brian Gartley pitch over the left field wall for a three run homer, his first of the season, for an early 3-0 lead.

The JackHammers chipped away against Flake with solo runs in the first and third. Freddie Thon drove home his 24th run of the season on a first inning double and Clint Toomey lifted a sacrifice fly in the third to cut the deficit at 3-2.

Flake picked up the victory, going six frames allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

The bullpen did the rest of the work, not allowing a single base runner the rest of the way. Zach Baldwin tossed a perfect seventh and Philip Roy retired the final six batters in a row for his sixth save of the season.

Gartley got the spot start, working the first four innings. The southpaw surrendered three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Rocco was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings out of the bullpen. William Jackel, Bear Bay and Drew Shetrone each tossed a scoreless frame for the JackHammers.

Joliet will venture to Schaumburg and Alexian Field for a three game series beginning tomorrow night. Ross Stout (2-2) will go opposite Dustin Glant (2-1). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. with a 6:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
