Simon Kubicek Commits to Oil Kings

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings are pleased to announce the commitment of 2001-born import defenceman Simon Kubicek (pronounced Koo-buh-check).

Kubicek, a Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic native, was acquired by the Oil Kings on January 25 from the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for import forward Vladimir Alistrov. The teams also swapped conditional picks in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenceman spent this past season on loan playing in the Czech professional league appearing in 30 games, putting up three points (1G, 2A) in 21 games with Motor Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Extraliga and four points (1G, 3A) in nine games with HC Stadion Litomerice in the second division.

Kubicek is a veteran of 113 regular season games in the WHL, all spent with Seattle, recording 55 points (16G, 39A), 111 penalty minutes, and a -2 plus/minus rating. During the 2019 playoffs he suited up in six post-season games with the Thunderbirds collecting four points (1G, 3A), eight penalty minutes and -1 plus/minus rating.

Kubicek has represented the Czech Republic several times internationally, most recently at the 2021 World Junior Championship in Edmonton, registering two points (1G, 1A) and 12 penalty minutes in four games. He also played for the Czech Republic at the 2020 World Junior Championship, the 2019 World U-18 Championship and the 2018 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

The right-shot rearguard was originally selected in the second round, 89th-overall, at the 2018 CHL Import Draft by Seattle.

The Oil Kings currently hold the 47th and 80th overall selection at the 2021 CHL Import Draft scheduled for Wednesday June 30.
