Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs have signed sixteen-year-old forward Simon Hughes.
The 6'2", 170lb native of Stratford, PEI was drafted in the second round of the 2020 QMJHL Entry Draft by the Sea Dogs, 38th overall. Hughes was previously playing at Mount St. Charles Hockey Academy in Rhode Island.
Hughes was one of 14 QMJHL drafted forwards invited to Hockey Canada's National Under-17 Development Camp this past summer.
"It feels great to finally be in Saint John and come to see the city and TD Station," said Hughes. "There's a lot of excitement towards the team this year and it's great to be with this group going forward."
In 2019-2020, Hughes played for the Charlottetown Bulk Carrier Knights of the NBPEIMMHL where he registered 42 points and 68 PIMS in 38 games. In 2018-2019 he represented PEI as an underage player at the Canada Winter Games registering three points in five games.
"We're happy to welcome Simon and his family to Saint John," said Sea Dogs President & General Manager, Trevor Georgie. "He adds size, skill, and offensive depth to our team. He's only 16 and hasn't played or practiced for a number of weeks so we will be patient with him. Our coaching and training staff will work with him over the coming weeks to get him into game shape and help him adjust to the pace and life of a Major Junior player."
Hughes will join the Sea Dogs later this week and will begin training and practicing with the club.
