Simon DesprÃs Named To Canadian National Under-18 Team
April 2, 2009 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- Hockey Canada announced today that Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Simon Després has been named to the roster for the Canadian National Under-18 Team. Després is the lone representative from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Team Canada's 22-man roster.
The 2009 IIHF World U-18 Championships will take place from April 9-19 in Fargo, North Dakota and Moorehead, Minnesota.
Després won a Gold Medal with Team Canada at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Europe. The 6'4", 214 lb. rearguard led Saint John in scoring by a defenseman last season with 2G-30A-32P while also registering a team-best rating of +16. In recognition of his outstanding 2008-09 campaign, Després was named Investors Group Top Defenseman at the Fourth Annual Sea Dogs Awards Banquet last month.
A native of Laval, QC, Després is currently rated as the top professional prospect in the QMJHL by several scouting bureaus and media outlets in anticipation of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft (June 26-27 in Montreal). The Sea Dogs originally acquired Després with the first overall selection at the 2007 QMJHL Entry Draft.
