
Riopel Double Winner at Golden Puck Awards

Moncton, NB - Moncton Wildcats MVP, goaltender Nicola Riopel has added the title of QMJHL's Most Valuable Player for the 2008-2009 season to his list of achievements. The award was presented Wednesday night at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Montreal, during the league's annual Golden Puck Awards. &nbs! p; The other nominees were Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll of the Shawinigan Cataractes and Yannick Riendeau of the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
Riopel, who had outstanding goaltending and leadership with the Wildcats during the past season, was awarded the Jacques Plante Trophy for the goalie with the best goals against average. Riopel's total for the season was 2.01 and surpassed the previous league record of 2.09 set 11 years ago by Patrick Couture. Riopel also surpassed the Wildcats team record of goals against of 2.47 set by Corey Crawford in 2004-2005. Over the season, Riopel set another team record with 43 wins, again passing Crawford who had 35 wins in 2004-05. He was selected the QMJHL defensive player of the week eight times during the year and was twice chosen as the CHL goaltender of the week.
The Wildcats will begin their quarter final playoff series with the Rimouski Oceanic in front of a sold out crowd on Friday night at the J. Louis Levesque Arena at 7 p.m. Game two will be played on Saturday night. Fans are asked to wear white to show their support of the home team.
Due to the sell out, Wildcats fans will be able to see the games via the internet on the Telus webcast at www.moncton-wildcats.com with Les Stoodley calling the action. The games will also be carried live on Rogers Radio, News 91.9 with Gerry Green providing the play-by-play.
