Silvertips Sign D and Listed Prospect Brady Van Herk to WHL Standard Player Agreement

December 26, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT, WA - The Everett Silvertips, proud seven-time U.S. Division champion and two time Western Conference champion of the Western Hockey League, and general manager Garry Davidson announced today that prospect and 2003-born defenseman Brady Van Herk has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement. By signing a WHL Standard Player Agreement, Van Herk is guaranteed a WHL Scholarship for every year he plays in the WHL.

"Brady came to our training camp two seasons ago as a player with plenty of ambition but had to battle to make an impression - and he took advantage of every opportunity he got to become a listed player," said Davidson. "It says a lot about his compete level. Add that to the fact he's now a 6-foot-3 defenseman with plenty of frame to grow into and his potential to make an impact is limitless. We're proud of what he's done to reach this milestone and looking forward to his continued hard work as a Silvertips prospect."

Van Herk, originally placed on the Silvertips protected list, has earned a pair of assists in two games with the North Island Silvertips (CSSHL) this year. Last season, he led the Silvertips U18 AAA (BCMML) defensemen in assists (12) and posted 14 points in 40 games along with 26 penalty minutes.

The Nanaimo, British Columbia native also suited up in four combined games with Campbell River and Nanaimo (VIJHL), and in 2018-19 posted 15 points (4g-11a) in 30 games from the blueline with North Island's U16 AAA program. Van Herk suited up in Silvertips 2019-20 training camp and also appeared in the program's annual Green vs. Grey Game at A.O.T.W. Arena.

"For us, the potential of Brady is rooted in the trend that he keeps improving and has made a lot of strides in the last two years," said Silvertips British Columbia scout Zed Malenica. "He's really committed, brawny, physical, and carries a large frame that lays the foundation of playing an effective shutdown role as a defenseman. The game has opened up in the last few years to embrace more depth in defensemen who can move the puck and attack, but you can't win in the playoffs without a little bit of bite and players who make it hard to play at the front of the net. Brady has no hesitation of filling that type of role and excelling at it."

"A day like this and signing with a great organization makes me nothing but extremely grateful to so many people who've helped make this a reality," said Van Herk. "A ton of thanks goes to my parents who've sacrificed so much, from driving me to the rink to running back home to get a stick if I ever forgot one . I'm pretty excited to help contribute with a defensive-first type of game - it's extremely rewarding to play a physical style and see a good first pass out of our zone develop into a goal on the other end of the ice. I'm looking forward to working hard for this organization in a great building to play and Tips fans who are so loyal."
