Everett Silvertips News Release
The Everett Silvertips held on in the waning moments of the third period to defeat the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 on Friday night. The win was especially rewarding for the players as many of their families made up the 6,514 inside the Everett Events Center. Everett is now 44-8-0-2 (90 pts) on the season and that includes a 2-3-0-1 record against Spokane.
The goaltenders were the story throughout the night. Reekie and Spokane's net-minder Dustin Tokarski both put on thrilling displays throughout the contest keeping their respective team in the game. Each swapped opportunities to shine bright throughout the first period, but it was Everett who was able to solve Tokarski first. Taylor Ellington fired a shot from just outside the top of the left circle and it deflected off of Brennan Sonne's leg who was in front of the crease. Zack Dailey picked up the secondary assist on the goal that came at the 19:11 mark.
Power-plays were the story of the second period. Everett had four opportunities of being up a man; they had one opportunity of being up two men for a minute-and-a-half. Many of the shot attempts from the Silvertips were blocked, but the ones that did get through were no match for Tokarski. Spokane on the other hand had just two power-plays but were able to convert on their first try. Stephane Lenoski passed the puck from the right point to Adam Hobson who was standing on the left face-off dot. The Hobson one-timer found it's way off of Reekie's padding and into the net. Jared Spurgeon also got an assist on what was at that point the game-tying goal at 6:09.
Spokane went back onto the power-play early in the third period and produced strong pressure on the Everett net. At one point the puck was lying in the crease behind Reekie but the Silvertips defense was able to swoop in and assist their goalie. Back at the other end of the ice just minutes later it was Zach Hamill scoring what would be the game-winner. Dan Gendur dug the puck out from the right boards and got it to Kyle Beach. In the process of the puck getting to Hamill in front, Tokarski found himself way out of position at the top of the crease. That left a wide open net for Hamill to softly backhand the puck into at 8:49.
Spokane called a time-out with just over two minutes remaining and pulled Tokarski for the extra attacker. Majority of the play during that time was spent in the Everett zone. But Reekie came through in the clutch including a spectacular glove save that he made through heavy traffic at the top of the crease.
The Silvertips are back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, February 10th against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Game time inside the Everett Events Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
