Silverbacks win 2-1 in Charleston
April 25, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks defeated the Charleston Battery on Saturday by a score of 2-1 in front of 4,257 fans at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium. The gorillas, with two goals by Fabian Dawkins for the second straight match, posted their second victory in their first three games, all away, in the USL First Division 2005 season.
The Silverbacks started the game by weathering a blistering attack by the home team, with Red-and-Black goalkeeper Christian Fegler valiantly repelling several Battery shots. Atlanta looked to the counter-attack for its offense, and thought it had drawn a penalty in the 30th minute, but the referee only signaled for a corner kick after Dawkins was brought down in the box.
Charleston continued its advance unabated, but the visitors struck first in minute 67. Substitute midfielder Kris Stone fed a cross to his fellow Jamaican for the second straight game, and Dawkins finished with aplomb. The Battery responded by bringing in a third forward and were rewarded for their efforts in the 82nd minute when Tim Karalexis sent a long throw into the area, where Chris Goos headed the ball past a diving Fegler.
Atlanta would steal the victory, however, with only two minutes remaining, when Dawkins was fed a through-ball and slotted home past black-and-gold netminder Chris Doyle, silencing the fans and the cannons at Blackbaud. The apes will now return home with six out of a possible nine points from its first three showings of the young season.
The 2005 home opener for the Silverbacks will be a re-match against the Battery on Saturday, April 30 with a 5:30 p.m. kick-off at DeKalb Memorial Stadium. For tickets and information on Atlanta's professional soccer club, please visit www.atlantasilverbacks.com.
