Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks will open their 2005 home schedule against the Charleston Battery this Saturday, April 30 at 5:30 p.m. at DeKalb Memorial Stadium. Atlanta (2 wins - 0 draws - 1 loss), fresh of last weekend's 2 - 1 victory at Charleston (0-0-1), will play its first home game after three-straight road matches.
The red-and-black will have a chance to win their first home opener since 2002, when they defeated the Indiana Blast 5-2. In 2003, Atlanta lost in overtime to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds after drawing 2-2 in regulation and lost 1-0 to the Syracuse Salty Dogs in 2004.
The Silverbacks have a 7-3-13 record all-time against the Battery. Three of Atlanta's losses to the gold-and-black have been in overtime (which the league has eliminated this year) and the apes won three out of four games against the gunners in 2004.
Atlanta is currently playing with only 17 men on the roster, as four veterans (John Ball, Devlin Barnes, Gary Brooks, Adilson De Lima) and one newcomer (Machel Millwood) are still finishing their professional indoor soccer seasons. Nonetheless, Head Coach David Vaudreuil has gotten some stellar performances out of his available troops.
Foremost among them is Jamaican international Fabian Dawkins, who has scored four goals in the last two games and was named as the USL First Division's Player-of-the-Week. Fellow Trelawny-native Kris Stone was also selected to the Team-of-the-Week with his two assists.
Gates at DeKalb Memorial open at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday for the pre-game festivities. For tickets and information on Atlanta's professional soccer club, please visit www.atlantasilverbacks.com.
