Battery ties Mariners

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery tied 1-1 with the Virginia Beach Mariners tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,835. Virginia Beach scored first and looked as if they would earn all three points but the Battery rallied through substitute forward, Alon Lubezky who volleyed home an equalizer late in stoppage time.

Charleston started brightly and came close to scoring in the 16th minute. Forward Greg Simmonds sent a curling cross to the back of the 18-yard box. Midfielder Andres Perez ran onto the pass but his first-time volley flew over the bar.

In the 30th minute the Mariners capitalized on a defensive error to break the deadlock. Forward David Castellanos latched onto an errant pass just inside the box and fired a low drive past Charleston goalkeeper Chris Doyle and into the goal.

After the break Charleston began to press as they searched for an equalizer outshooting the Mariners by eleven shots to none in the second period.

In the 65th minute Simmonds missed the target by inches volleying an Alon Lubezky flick just wide.

The Battery finally leveled it in stoppage time at the end of the game. Defender Tim Karalexis drove a free-kick into the box where Alan Woods flicked it on with a angled header. Lubezky positioned himself for a volley and lashed a left-footed shot past Mariners keeper Matt Nelson.

Tonight's match was World Record Night as the Battery fans attempted to set an official Guinness World Record for the most people wearing Groucho Marx glasses in one location. The unofficial count of fans wearing the Grouch Marx glasses was 1,509; a new Guinness World Record.

Next up for the Charleston Battery is a match versus the Atlanta Silverbacks, tomorrow night in Atlanta; kick off is set for 5:30 PM (Progressive 730 / www.charlestonbattery.com).
