San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars open training camp with practice from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 23 at Antioch Baptist Church Sports Complex and Community Center, 314 Eross St.
The Silver Stars will open camp with nine players and expect Vickie Johnson, Dalma Ivanyi and Agnieszka Bibrzycka to join the squad some time in May. Chantelle Anderson will arrive on Monday, April 24. In addition to returning players Shyra Ely, Kendra Wecker, LaToya Thomas, Shannon Johnson and Katie Feenstra, the Silver Stars welcome a few new faces to camp. Head Coach/General Manager Dan Hughes picked up Baylor standout Sophia Young and Tennessee star Shanna Zolman in the 2006 WNBA Draft. Both athletes attended rookie orientation in Chicago this week and will arrive in San Antonio Saturday.
Hughes picked up Vickie Johnson, one of only seven current WNBA players to have played in each of the league's last nine seasons, and signed free agent guard Jae Kingi-Cross in the off season. Veteran Marie Ferdinand is due to have her first child in early June and will miss both training camp and the beginning of the 2006 season.
Practices during training camp will be at the Antioch Baptist Church Sports Complex and Community Center unless otherwise noted and are tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. most days with some days slated for 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Practices are open to the media with Silver Stars players and coaches available for interviews following each practice session. Media members wishing to schedule extensive interviews after practice should contact the Silver Stars media services staff.
The Silver Stars have scheduled three pre-season games, beginning with a May 6 tilt against Washington at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. The Silver Stars then play Charlotte twice, at Charlotte on May 9 followed by a 7 p.m. tip with Charlotte at the AT&T Center on May 12.
The WNBA celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2006. The season tips off on Saturday, May 20 with ABC's national telecast from Sacramento where the defending WNBA Champion Monarchs square off against all-star guard Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury at ARCO Arena. Opening day also includes the inaugural game of the league's 14th franchise, the Chicago Sky.
