Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
The Syracuse Silver Knights returned to winning ways Thursday night when they hosted the Norfolk SharX. The Silver Knights put up 21 points to Norfolk's four to close the gap with Rochester in the Eastern Division playoff race.
New signing Enrique Tovar proved himself early on, starting in his Syracuse debut. The San Jose native got involved early and often. He netted two goals and an assist in front of 3,144.
Slavisa Ubiparipovic started the scoring just a minute and forty seconds into the game, nailing one home from beyond the three-point arc. Jeff Hughes added his name to the scoresheet with just over five minutes to go in the first quarter when he knocked Nelson Santana's free kick into the side netting. Tovar scored his first just under a minute later with assistance from Ubiparipovic.
The game settled into a defensive battle for half of the second quarter until Norfolk's Matthew Delicate broke through with an unassisted goal. Daniel Stevens answered 41 seconds later on a narrow angle along the wall, giving the Silver Knights the 9-2 lead at halftime.
Syracuse didn't look back. The Silver Knights had five different players find net in the third quarter, with Ubiparipovic, Tovar, and Stevens all scoring their second goals on the night. Kenardo Forbes scored his third of the season, and Cory Elenio found help on a cross from the SharX defense when Andrew Marshall attempts a clearance but heads it into his own net.
SharX striker Matt Clare pulled one back in the fourth quarter, but Nelson Santana closed out the scoring to give the Silver Knights the victory. Seven Silver Knights found the back of the net on the night.
The win gives Syracuse a boost in the playoff race, pulling within half a game of the Rochester Lancers. The team travels west to face their rivals on Sunday to finish the season's Thruway series. The Silver Knights play their final away game on Tuesday when they enter the Norfolk Scope Arena looking for a repeat of tonight's result. Fans can follow the game on MISLLiveSoccer.com and through the Silver Knights Twitter feed, @CuseKnightsMISL.
The Silver Knights close out the season with a three-game homestand starting Wednesday, February 22nd when the team takes on the league-leading Milwaukee Wave at 7:00 PM. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the Oncenter box office or online through Ticketmaster.
