Comets to Kick of Season's Home Stretch
February 9, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Kansas City Comets News Release
(Independence, MO) Rested and confident coming off a record-setting victory followed by the longest break of the year, the Comets get back to action with two games this weekend. The games mark the beginning of a crucial five-game stretch that will close out the 2011-12 regular season over the next 17 days. Four out of five of those contests come against the two division leaders in the MISL, including Friday night's home game against the Baltimore Blast, atop the Eastern Division at 14-5, and Sunday's road match versus Milwaukee who leads the Central at 15-2.
The Comets are 11-8 after two straight wins, five games behind Milwaukee but three games clear of Wichita for the second playoff spot. The team routed Syracuse on January 25, setting an MISL season high for points scored and margin of victory in a 33-12 win. Now after 15 days off, the Comets should be refreshed and ready for the season's stretch run.
Midfielder Geison continues to lead the MISL in scoring as he has all season. He scored 21 points in January, earning him MISL Player of the Month honors, and now has 69 for the year. Forward Tiguinho was named MISL Player of the Week for his play in the Syracuse game when he scored two goals and dished out five assists.
Baltimore and Milwaukee played last Saturday in the most recent game for both teams. The host Wave jumped on the Blast early and often, scoring seven first quarter goals to build a 14-0 lead and eventually win 22-8. The Wave will host Wichita Friday night before the Comets visit Sunday.
The game against Baltimore will be the fourth and final meeting between the Blast and Comets this season. The Comets need a win to salvage a split in the season series. The Blast won at the Independence Events Center 10-8 in overtime back in November. The two teams split a pair of December games in Baltimore. The often explosive Comets offense has averaged less than 10 points per game against the Blast in the previous three meetings.
Three of the Comets final four games will be against Milwaukee starting Sunday. The team has dropped three close games to the Wave this year, losing by an average of five points.
Friday's 7:35pm game against Baltimore is also the 2nd Annual Pink Game. Comets players will be wearing pink jerseys in honor of the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation. The jerseys will be auctioned off immediately following the game with a portion of the proceeds benefitting this important cause. Fans are encouraged to watch Sunday's 3:00pm game against Milwaukee at the Official Watch Party home of the Comets, the BrewTop Pub and Patio in Lee's Summit.
