Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, New York - The Silver Knights took on the Baltimore Blast in the second game of their weekend double header. After an overtime shootout win on Friday night the Knights were looking to finish off the big weekend by taking down the powerful Blast. Doug Miller provided the spark the Knights were looking for and led the team to a 3-2 win, handing the Blast their first loss on the season.
The game started with both teams getting shots off early and often. Neither team was going to sit back and wait as both teams started their attack from the opening whistle. The Blast were the first side to get on the board as the visiting side got two goals in the opening quarter from Dos Santos and Roque. The undefeated Blast took the two goal lead into the beginning of the second quarter.
The second quarter got off to a fast start for the Silver Knights with getting the first power play of the game. But the Blast defense stood tall and was able to keep the Knights without a goal during the penalty kill. But the Silver Knights weren't done yet and stayed on the attack for the remainder of the quarter. Domenico Vitale was able to capitalize on the offensive pressure with his 3rd goal of the season on an assist from Nate Bourdeau. The score would remain 2-1 in favor of the Blast heading into the halftime.
The second half proved to be the deciding factor in the match today. With no goals coming in the third quarter, the Silver Knights had their work cut out for them in the fourth and final quarter.
But that fourth and final quarter would be a special one for the Silver Knights and especially for new comer Doug Miller.
"I brought him in for his experience, and that's what he has shown all weekend."
Doug Miller proved that experience in front of the largest Silver Knight crowd on the season. Miller provided the game tying assist on a free kick play to Kenardo Forbes with 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. With the Blast on their heels, the Silver Knights were able to stay on the attack and made the most of their chances. Doug Miller once again found himself in the right spot at the right time scoring the game winning goal off of a rebound shot from Joey Tavernese with 7 minutes to go in the game.
The Blast did all they could, pulled Vanzella out for an extra attacker for the final 3 minutes of the game, but the Silver Knight defense were able to hold on to give the Baltimore Blast their first goal on the year.
Picking up his second victory was Andrew Coughlin who made 14 saves in goal.
The Silver Knights will be hitting the road next weekend as the team heads out Central to play the Chicago Mustangs and Milwaukee Wave. Get your tickets now for the next home game on Thursday, February 18th at 7:00 pm as the Knights take on the Harrisburg Heat.
