Silver Knights Drop to 3-2

November 23, 2011 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Silver Knights were served their second straight loss at the hands of the Rochester Lancers on Wednesday night in front of rowdy home crowd of 3,289. An eight-point comeback in the third quarter, as well as a hat trick by Jeff Hughes, were not enough to slow down the Lancers as they went on to defeat the Silver Knights 22-13.

The Silver Knights would lead the game early as they scored 44 seconds into the game through Slavisa Ubiparapovic, the current MISL scoring leader. But the Lancers controlled the rest of the half, keeping the Silver Knights off the board while scoring five consecutive goals to take control. Lubo Kocic got things underway for the Lancers with a power play goal, and Mauricio Salles scored twice and Doug Miller once for an 8-2 first-quarter lead. Andrew Hoxie scored the only goal of the second quarter, giving the Lancers an eight-point advantage at the break.

The Silver Knights rallied at the start of the second half, though, with Ubiparipovic scoring back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to cut the lead to four. While Gary Boughton got the Lancers on the board, the Syracuse rally continued through Jeff Hughes, who scored a pair of goals to reduce the Silver Knights' deficit to two, 12-10, with 8:23 gone in the thir quarter.

That was as close as Syracuse would get, though, as a pair of late third-quarter goals by Brayton Knapp and Miller, taking advantage of a turnover with 15 seconds to play in the quarter, extended the lead to six with 15 minutes to play.

The Lancers' spread the wealth as eight different players scored during the match, with Salles, Miller, Knapp and Kocic each scoring twice. The Lancers were also strong defensively, blocking 16 of the Silver Knights' 41 total shots while goalkeeper Pat Hannigan made 19 saves.

The Lancers are now 2-2 and remain in third place in the Eastern Division. The Silver Knights, now 3-2, have been knocked out of the 1st place spot with the tonight's loss and the Baltimore Blast's victory earlier this week. The Silver Knights will host the Blast this Sunday in their next game, scheduled for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff at the Oncenter War Memorial. Tickets are available via ticketmaster.com and the Oncenter box office.
