Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Des Moines, IA - Sean Gallagher tossed seven innings of five hit, one run baseball as the Iowa Cubs beat the Sidewinders 3-1 on Friday night. Gallagher struck out five and earned his third win in five Triple-A starts.

Bill Murphy was the tough luck loser for the Sidewinders. Murphy allowed just four hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings. He struck out a season high nine and walked just one.

Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Geovany Soto's solo home run to straight away center field but the Sidewinders tied it with a run in the third. Matt Erickson led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Murphy. Alberto Callaspo delivered a sacrifice fly for his 24th RBI of the year and his 10th RBI in the last 11 games.

The Cubs took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Jake Fox and Buck Coats had back to back singles. Alex Romero tried to throw Fox out at third base but the throw skipped by both Jamie D'Antona and Murphy and rolled into the Iowa dugout allowing Fox to score the go ahead run.

Iowa tacked on an insurance run in the seventh against Dustin Glant as pinch hitter John Nelson doubled down the left field line to score Matt Craig who had walked.

Gallagher retired the final nine Sidewinders he faced after a leadoff single by Jeff Salazar in the fifth. Les Walrond took over in the eighth and gave up a leadoff double to Rich Thomspon but retired the next four batters he faced. Ben Howard recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season.

The Sidewinders and Cubs wrap up their four game series on Saturday night at Principal Park. Right-hander D.J. Carrasco (5-10, 5.72 ) starts for Tucson against right-hander Kevin Hart (1-1, 3.46) for Iowa. First pitch is at 5:05 Tucson time. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:00.
