Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biloxi Shuckers (56-54/22-21) edged past the Montgomery Biscuits (55-50/27-16) 5-4 in a game that came down to the final inning Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Both teams went back-and-forth as there were several lead changes and close calls, but it was the Shuckers that prevailed thanks to Andruw Monasterio.
Biscuit's starter, Mason Montgomery (0-0) opened his appearance with a little turbulence as he surrendered a run to Cam Devanney in the first inning to make it 1-0. Devanney tried to stretch the hit to third and but was thrown out at the base on a strong throw by right fielder Niko Hulsizer.
Shuckers' starter, Robert Gasser (1-0) started to feel his groove as he struck out two Biscuits' batters in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning, the Shuckers grew their lead to three unanswered as Nick Khale hit a deep two-run home run that traveled 450 feet and bounced off the train depot to make it 3-0. The homer would be the first for either team in the series and ended Khale's cold spell of being 0-10 against lefties.
In the bottom of the second, Biscuits shortstop Greg Jones connected on an RBI-single and cut the lead to 3-1. After three scoreless innings, the Shuckers relieved Gasser of his duties and entered reliever Luis Contreras in the sixth. Contreras ran into trouble early as he surrendered three runs and the Biscuits took the lead 4-3.
Biscuits outfielder, Diego Infante smacked a deep ball to right that took a bounce and wedged between the outfield wall for a ground rule double. The hit prevented what the home crowd thought was a three-run home run. As the Montgomery batters were sent back to third and second base, catcher Blake Hunt drove them home for good for a two-run RBI-single to give the Biscuits the lead for the first time of the night.
In the seventh, Biloxi was able to get back on top 5-4 as Andruw Monasterio connected on a two-run RBI-double.
The next two innings were scoreless for both as the score stayed at 5-4.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs speedy Jones was able to reach first after a grounder that was bobbled by Shuckers first baseman Thomas Dillard. With two outs and two on, Simon struck out on a full count to end the game and give the Shuckers the victory.
With the series tied at 2-2, Montgomery will try to capture the win in their rubber match Saturday as RHP Evan McKendry (0-4) duels LHP Nick Bennett (6-9)
The rest of the series includes Family Faith Night & MAX Fireworks Saturday, August 20th at 6:05 PM CT, and Kids Backpack Giveaway presented By Whataburger & Bark in the Park Sunday, August 21st at 3:33 PM CT.
