Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Taj Bradley was magnificent on the mound, but the Biscuits (34-37/6-3) were shut out by the Biloxi Shuckers (37-39/3-6), 2-0, on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The victory was Biloxi's first in 15 tries in Montgomery.
Bradley, the Tampa Bay Rays' number two prospect, made his 15th start of the season for the Biscuits, and the right-hander worked a one-two-three top of the first, striking out Biloxi lead-off hitter Sal Frelick.
Nick Bennett (4-7) started on the mound for the Shuckers, and the lefty allowed two baserunners in the bottom of the first on an error by shortstop Andruw Monsterio, and on a single to Osleivis Basabe, but still struck out the side and kept it a scoreless game after one.
Bradley sat the Shuckers down in order again in the top of the second, striking out two more in Thomas Dillard and Felix Valerio. Niko Hulsizer crushed a double off the top of the wall in left-center field to begin the bottom of the second inning, before Bennett retired the next three batters and picked up his fourth strikeout.
Bradley continued to dominate in the top of the third, striking out two more in a one-two-three frame. Bennett countered with a one-two-three bottom of the third, striking out Brett Wisely and Greg Jones to run his total to six.
Monasterio broke up Bradley's perfect game with a two-out single in the top of the fourth, but proved to be Biloxi's lone baserunner of the inning. Bennett then worked another one-two-three inning in the bottom of the fourth and struck out two more to match a career-high with eight punch-outs.
Bradley kept the Shuckers off the board in the top of the fifth and in the top of the sixth, ending his night with seven strikeouts and no walks. Bennett struck out Jones in a scoreless sixth for a new career-high nine strikeouts as the game remained scoreless.
Carlos Garcia (5-1) took over for Bradley in the top of the seventh, and after retiring the first two batters on flyouts to center, the righty walked Dillard and then hit Valerio. With runners at first and second, Cam Devanney stepped up and clubbed a two-out RBI-single to center on a 2-2 pitch to make it 1-0 Shuckers. Gabe Holt floated an RBI-single to center in the next at-bat to double that lead to 2-0.
Nash Walters fired in a scoreless bottom of the seventh in relief of Bennett, and then Jose Lopez spun a scoreless top of the eighth in relief of Garcia. Wisely walked and Jones singled in the bottom of the eighth, but Harold Chirino retired everyone else to preserve the 2-0 Biloxi lead.
Lopez hurled a scoreless top of the ninth, and then the Biscuits offense made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth against Zach Vennaro. After the right-hander struck out Kameron Misner to begin the final half-inning, Hulsizer walked, and then Roberto Alvarez singled before Evan Edwards was hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out. Birthday boy Garrett Hiott was up next, and after fouling off several pitches, the right fielder bounced one up the middle and the Shuckers second baseman Valerio made an unbelievable play, flipping the ball with his glove to second to Monasterio, who threw it to first for an inning-ending, game-ending double play.
The Biscuits will try to bounce back on Friday when John Doxakis (0-2) takes on Brandon Knarr (0-1) at 6:35 PM CT when there will be a Kimchi Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Pulmuone and a Jersey Auction.
The rest of the series will include a Mystery Bobblehead Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday July 9 at 6:05 PM CT, and a Fishing Bobber Giveaway presented By Go Fish Alabama & Bark in the Park on Sunday, July 10 at 3:33 PM CT.
