Red Bull New York News Release

SANTA CLARA, CA - Down a man for 77 minutes, the New York Red Bulls had a three-game winning streak snapped, losing to the San Jose Earthquakes, 4-0, at Buck Shaw Stadium Saturday night. New York, which is still in first place in the Eastern Conference with 15 points, dropped to 5-2-0 in MLS regular season play.

New York threatened early, with forward Juan Pablo Angel looking to open his account when he flicked a header off a Joel Lindpere corner over the bar. Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski answered with a shot of his own that goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul went down to collect.

For the first time this season, the Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute, when defender Luke Sassano was given a red card by referee Andrew Chapin for a tackle on San Jose midfielder Bobby Convey.

San Jose looked to capitalize on their man advantage and in the 23rd minute, forward Ryan Johnson was free in on goal after a turnover in New York's defensive half. However, Coundoul was able to make the stop. Five minutes later, Earthquake Andre Luiz slid a shot goalbound from a Convey corner kick and Coundoul punched the ball away.

On the other end, Tony Tchani was free at the back post from a Lindpere free kick, but he slipped and knocked the ball wide. With 10 minutes left in the half, Lindpere had space at the top of the 18-yard box and rifled his attempt left.

San Jose took the lead a minute before halftime. Wondolowski found Convey on the wing and the midfielder swung in a cross to an open Johnson, who hit a left-footed volley past Coundoul.

The Earthquakes doubled their advantage in the 55th minute. Johnson fed Joey Gjertsen on the left side of the box and he cut back before firing a shot underneath Coundoul and into the back of the net. Wondolowski put his name on the scoresheet 13 minutes from full time, tapping home a Ramiro Corrales cross from close range.

San Jose finished the scoring in the 85th minute, as Bobby Burling headed home a Convey corner kick.

The Red Bulls made two changes to the lineup from last Saturday's 2-0 win over D.C. United, with midfielder Tony Tchani earning his first career MLS start in place of Carl Robinson and Sassano replacing Jeremy Hall at right back.

The Red Bulls' return home for four straight matches in different competitions, first playing the New England Revolution on Wednesday, May 12 at 8:00 PM at Red Bull Arena in a Lamar Hunt MLS qualifying round match. On Saturday, May 15, New York faces Seattle Sounders FC at 7:30 PM in MLS regular season matches (TV: MSG; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). Full Season Ticket Plans for the New York Red Bulls' first season at Red Bull Arena are on sale now.
