Trenton Titans News Release
TRENTON - In what was a back-and forth battle between the Trenton Titans and Reading Royals Wednesday afternoon, the shootout again proved to be a hurdle for the Titans,
In dropping a 6-5 shootout loss before an Educational Day crowd of 2,375, the Titans (16-25-3-5-40) picked up a point, but also lost one to the Royals (22-22-3-3-50) in the ECHL Atlantic Division Standings. The shootout setback was the Titans' fifth without a win.
Reading took a 2-0 lead in this one on goals by Derrick LaPoint 4:42 into the game and Matt Caruana on the power-play at the 7:15 mark. The Titans, however, scored 40 seconds later, as sizzling Dustin Cameron netted his 14th on the power play.
The Royals' Yannick Tifu pushed the visitors' margin to 3-1 on a semi-breakaway at 13:03, but Cameron, with his 15th goal, closed the gap to 3-2 just 18 seconds before the end of a wide-open first period.
"We kind of got out of our game then,'' said Titans head coach Vince Williams. "Reading likes to play a wide-open game and we got involved in it.''
Olivier Labelle restored a two-goal Royals lead, making it 4-2 on his 20th goal on the power play 2:04 into the second period. The Titans retaliated 2:36 later when Andy Bohmbach, who, along with defenseman Tyler Hostetter, was returned to the Titans from Adirondack Wednesday. Bohmbach scored his team-leading 17th goal and fourth in the Titans' last three games.
The Titans squared matters for the first time on a Matt Germain tip-in with 9:33 remaining in the second period and took their first lead if the day at 5-4 on Eric Baier's third goal with 12:05 remaining. Reading sent it into overtime on Mikael Bedard's 13th with 10:25 left.'
After a scoreless overtime, Tifu, Caruana, Labelle and Bedard scored against Brad Phillips, while Ryan Hayes, Rob Bordson and Bohmbach hit the net against Reading's Jussi Rynnas. Ray DiLauro and Cameron missed the mark, giving the Royals just their second win in six games against the Titans.
"We play them (the Royals) again at home Friday (7 p.m.),'' said Williams. "We'll see if we can change the result.''
