Berkshire Black Bears News Release

The Black Bears crushed the Rox Tuesday night, ending Brockton's hopes of the first-half North Division crown with a whopping 14-3 final score.

The Black Bears' offense snarled at the Brockton starter, Rodney Allen, breaking the game wide open in the third inning. Leading 1-0, Chris Briones singled, Jose Mateo was hit by a pitch, and Kevin Forbes reached on an error by the Rox shortstop, Saul Bustos, bringing Shane Hopper to the plate. Hopper smacked a 2-run single, scoring Jose Mateo and Briones. Then with two outs, Pete Paciorek hit a looping single with Forbes on second, and Brady Williams singled in Paciorek and Shane Hopper, giving the Black Bears a 6-0 edge. But the Black Bears weren't finished just yet. In the 6th, Shane Hopper destroyed a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence, his fourth blast of the year, extending the Berkshire lead to nine. The next inning Pete Paciorek hit a dinger of his own, a solo bomb down the right field line, part of 5-runs scored by Berkshire over their last two innings at the plate, for a final tally of 14-3.

The Black Bears starting pitcher Rick Guttormson picked up the win (4-5), thanks in part to the big run support from his teammates' bats. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits, with six strikeouts over eighth innings tonight. The Brockton starter, Rodney Allen, fell to 4-4 with the loss. Allen allowed nine runs (three earned) and eight hits over 3 and 1/3 innings. Wednesday night's series finale at Wahconah marks the final game in the first-half of the season.
