Spokane Shock News Release

December 10th, 2008: Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock and the rest of the arenfootball2 league will play the 2009 season as planned, despite the decision of its parent league-the Arena Football League-to suspend operations.

Financial troubles have caused the AFL to cancel what would have been its 23rd season in 2009. The league, which has been seeking ways to improve its financial footing, said Tuesday it still is not ready to announce a long-term plan.

In a statement released Tuesday, the AFL said it "is working on long-term structural improvements." Sources say the league intends to rework its financial foundation and resume operations for the 2010 season.

The arenafootball2 league, the official developmental league of the AFL, will continue to operate as usual and will play in 2009-its 10th anniversary season. The af2 operates entirely on its own and is not directly affected by the AFL's current situation.

"Our league (the af2) operates completely independently from the AFL," explained Shock General Manager Adam Nebeker. "While we hope the AFL is able to resume play in 2010, the af2 is a completely separate business entity and we'll be playing in 2009 and beyond regardless of the status of the AFL."

The Shock will begin the 2009 season by hosting the Stockton Lightning on Friday, April 4th 2009 in the Spokane Arena on Spokane Tribe Field. Season tickets for the 2009 season are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 509 242 7462 today.
