Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 today announced QB Quincy Carter and OL Garrett Mason as the first assignees to the 2009 roster. Carter is a former Dallas Cowboy who most recently played with the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League. Mason played for the Dorados last season as a rookie lineman.

Season ticket plans are available now for as low as $28 per month by calling (956) 843-7825.

"This is an important moment in the history of the Dorados franchise," General Manager Grant W. Buckborough explained. "Not only do we welcome a big name, but we welcome a guy with a tremendous arm who we hope will guide us deep into the playoffs."

"Having Quincy at quarterback solidifies the position and gives fans in the Valley a familiar name to come and see play," Dorados Head Coach Marty Hammond said. "Garrett is another familiar name to local fans and I'm excited to have the opportunity to pair them together," he said.

Carter, 31, is well known to Valley football fans. He spent four seasons in the NFL, playing with the Dallas Cowboys from 2001 to 2003 and the New York Jets in 2004. Carter played for the af2 Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings in 2007. That year, he faced RGV three times and led the Wings past the heavily favored Dorados in the second round of the playoffs with four TD passes and 214 passing yards.

"Talking with Bucky (Buckborough) and Coach Hammond, we all felt this was a chance for me to continue my football career and potentially get some looks at another shot at the CFL or NFL," Carter said. This is an organization that is always competitive and has great fans. I'm excited for the upcoming season."

In addition to playing for the Dorados, Carter has been running the Quincy Carter Quarterback Academy in Alamo since relocating to the Valley to be with his girlfriend, whom he met while playing for Bossier-Shreveport in 2007.

"I'm teaching the fundamentals of the position, from footwork to command in the huddle," Carter said. "It's an ongoing program with weekly and monthly sessions." For more information on the sessions, call 956-907-6831.

Mason is a McAllen High School graduate who turned pro with the Dorados in 2008. He was a member of an offensive line that allowed the fewest sack yards in af2 (50) and the third-fewest sacks overall (14).

A graduate of Duke University, Mason was a two-year starter at McAllen and named First Team All-District as a senior as well as First Team All-Area, First Team All-Valley and Honorable Mention All-State. He also served as team captain and was elected to play in the Texas All-Star Game.

The Dorados return to the Dodge Arena in 2009 for their sixth season of af2 action. The team's home opener is on Saturday, April 18, vs. Bossier-Shreveport. The regular season begins on the road on Saturday, March 28 at Corpus Christi.
