Worcester Sharks News Release
Worcester, MA- The Worcester Sharks (13-10-1-2, 29pts) fell 3-2 in their eighth straight game decided by just one goal to the Portland Pirates (15-10-1-1, 32pts) on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,665 fans at the DCU Center.
Harri Sateri played solid in net for the Sharks in the loss, turning aside 29 of the 32 shots that he faced. James Sheppard (6th) scored for a second straight game, scoring the Sharks second goal of the afternoon, after depositing two last night in Hershey. Matt Tennyson (2nd) also scored for the Sharks, burying a power play goal early in the first period.
It didn't take the Sharks long to get on the board. After Rob Klinkhammer took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty just 58 seconds into the game, the Sharks capitalized quickly. Only 25 seconds into the man advantage, Matt Tennyson's (2nd) bomb from the point beat Pirate goaltender Chad Johnson off the post glove-side, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. However, the Worcester lead didn't last long. Brendan Shinnimin (4th) found the back of the cage just 13 seconds after Tennyson's goal, tying the game at 1-1, on a nice feed from Ethan Werek. James Sheppard (6th) put the Sharks ahead just past the halfway point of the first period, one-timing a Brodie Reid pass past Johnson, giving the a Sharks a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates capitalized on a power play opportunity of their own early in the second period, when Portland captain Alexandre Bolduc found a streaking Brandon Gormley (2nd) far post for the easy tap in, evening the game 2-2. The Pirates carried the play in the second period, outshooting the Sharks 12-4. Harri Sateri made a series of impressive saves towards the end of the period to keep the score even.
Portland took their first lead of the game almost six minutes into the third period, when Andy Miele (7th) poked the puck past Sateri with traffic in front of the cage, putting the Pirates up 3-2. That ended up being the difference as the Sharks couldn't bury the equalizer despite outshooting the Pirates 8-5 in the period.
The Sharks overall record falls to 13-10-1-2 (29pts in 26gp) and 5-5-1-1 (12pts in 12gp) at home this season.
