Shaw, Power Play Stellar as 'Cats Push Past Bees

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Behind Austin Shaw's second shutout of the season and a pair of power-play tallies, the Wichita Falls Wildcats blanked the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, 2-0, at the Kay Yeager Coliseum on Saturday on Jersey Off Our Back Night.
Nick Farmer and Erich Jaeger each scored on the man-advantage for the 'Cats, while Matt Koch had a pair of assists and Kevin Charyszyn added a helper as well. Farmer also notched an assist for his sixth multi-point game in his last seven outings. In net, Shaw turned aside all 25 shots faced to earn his 15th win of the campaign.
Wichita Falls was first to find the back of the net, and did so on the game's first power-play opportunity for either side.
In the first 10 seconds of the man advantage, Farmer started a breakout play with Charyszyn and motored ahead as Charyszyn moved his way through the neutral zone. While Charyszyn moved around a man at the blue line and skated to the left-wing face-off circle, Farmer skated down the slot to the top of the crease. Just below the circle, Charyszyn feathered a perfect tape-to-tape pass, setting up an easy tap-in for Farmer. The goal, coming at 11:41 of the first period, marked Farmer's 15th tally of the season.
The second period featured a plethora of penalties, with both teams picking up misconducts and minors, but it was the 'Cats who managed to capitalize on their man-advantage chance as the period wound down.
After killing off a five-minute major power play for Rio Grande Valley that did not see the Bees generate any high-quality scoring chances, Wichita Falls went on its second power play of the night, and made it count.
A series of passes along the left-wing wall opened up space in the middle, which Jaeger wheeled his way into. With Ben Johansson screened in the Bees net, Jaeger let loose a whistling wrister that Johansson never saw the effort as it nestled over his shoulder to make it 2-0 at 19:08 of the second.
Rio Grande Valley pressed to get back into the contest in the third, but Shaw steered all 10 shots on goal aside to seal the 2-0 win for Wichita Falls.
The Wildcats are next in action when they host the Corpus Christi IceRays on Jan 22 and 23 at the KYC. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. both nights. Fans that cannot make it to the arena may follow all the action on FASTHockey.com, with an audio-only broadcast available via YouTube.
