Shaw Named NWL Player of the Week
September 8, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Ore. - Chris Shaw was selected as the Northwest League Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season, ranging from August 31 to September 7, the league announced Monday.
Shaw became the fourth member of the Salem-Keizer roster to earn the honor in 2015. Nolan Riggs (June 22-28), Jose Vizcaino Jr. (July 6-12) and C.J. Hinojosa (August 10-16) also earned the distinction this season.
The success in Shaw's first professional season was amplified in the final week of the Northwest League regular season, as the Volcanoes collectively made a push towards the playoffs. Shaw went 8-for-23 (.348) wtih three doubles, three home runs and five RBIs on the week. He was one of just seven minor leaguers to collect three or more doubles and three or more home runs.
Entering Salem-Keizer's August 26 game in Everett with seven home runs in 2015, Shaw made a late push to finish with 12 -- a mark that ranked best in the league. The Boston College product hit six homers in his final ten regular season games for the Volcanoes.
Playing in just 46 games, the Giants first rounder finished 28 at bats shy of qualifying for the 2015 Northwest League leaderboards, where he would have ranked first in slugging percentage (.551) and first in OPS (.911).
The Volcanoes are tied with Hillsboro for second-most player of the week selections this season, behind Everett's seven. A Salem-Keizer player had won the award three times in each of the past two seasons.
The 2015 Salem-Keizer squad had the most player of the week selections since 2009, when six Volcanoes earned the weekly award. Wilber Bucardo, Juan Martinez, Drew Biery, Orlando Yntema, Craig Westcott and Ryan Cavan highlighted the weekly awards for the 2009 Northwest League Championship team.
Jason Forjet of the 2014 Volcanoes was selected as the California League Pitcher of the Week for the San Jose Giants, tossing eight three-hit innings of shutout baseball with ten strikeouts in a Sept. 1 win over Modesto.
