Sharks Use Big Inning to Down Generals

July 6, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Scoring came nearly all at once on Wednesday night for the Wilmington Sharks (20-11, 4-0), as they scored six runs in the third inning, to win 7-3 over the Petersburg Generals (9-19, 1-1).

The Sharks took the lead in the first, and held it the entire game. Mark Donadio (Fordham) lead off with a base hit and scored on a fielder's choice from Alec Bohm (Wichita State). But the scoring spree came in the third, when the Sharks loaded the bases for Bohm. He came through with the base hit that scored two. Madison Stokes (South Carolina) singled to score another. Brett Smith (Bucknell) grounded out to bring home the fourth run of the inning, and then Matt Meeder (Mercer) hit a single to right that scored two. In all, six runs came across to give the Sharks a 7-0 lead.

Petersburg attempted to get back into it in the sixth, when they plated two runs on two hits and an error. They left two more on though, and failed to truly respond. They would add one more in the ninth, after a 30 minute delay for lighting issues, but Kyler Stout (Oral Roberts) came on to finish off the opposition.

The win went to Ethan Wortkoetter (3-1). He threw seven innings, with six hits, two runs, only one earned, three walks and five strikeouts. Baylor Sundal (2-2) took the loss, pitching four innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits, one walk and one strikeout.

The Sharks head out on the road Thursday to face Peninsula, but return home Friday to host Fayetteville.
