Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Sharks (5-4) used a four run second inning to defeat the Wilson Tobs (4-8) by a score of 7-1 Saturday. Cody Tyler (2-0) got his second win of the season by striking out six Tobs, allowing four hits and no runs. Nick Rotola (Oral Roberts) and Sam Foy (Davidson) each had two hits Saturday night.
Wilmington picked up four runs early and never looked back. Sam Foy led off the second and singled up the middle and moved up to second as Jae Roberts (N. Greenville) drew a walk. An Andrew Locklear (N. Greenville) single to center would score Foy. Brett Smith (Bucknell) was plucked to load the bases as the lineup card turned over for Nick Rotola. Rotola made solid contact to left-center to clear the bases, bringing in three RBIs.
The Sharks picked up some insurance runs in the sixth when Tobs reliever Reich walked Locklear to lead off the frame. Smith was hit by yet another pitch, followed by a Rotola walk to load the bases, bringing up Matt Meeder (Mercer). Meeder blooped a single backside to score Locklear and keep the carousel turning. Destino grounded out up the middle, but it would drive in Brett Smith, representing the sixth Sharks run. Andrew Locklear scored in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brett Smith for the seventh and final run for the Sharks.
Wilson would scratch one in the eighth off of Sharks reliever Tyler Jones (Wichita State), the result of two hits and a walk. Matt Vogel shut the door for Wilmington in the ninth, facing three batters and striking out each of them.
Sunday will be an off day for the Sharks, before they travel to Edenton Monday to face the Steamers. The Wilson Tobs will have a chance to avenge Saturday night's loss as they will be hosted by the Sharks on Tuesday night. Tuesday Night is Taco Tuesday sponsored by Moe's Southwest Grill of Wilmington, where fans can get Moe's tacos for just $2, and wash them down with Corona and Modelos for the same price.
