Late Rally Not Enough, Blowfish Fall to Copperheads

Lexington County Blowfish News Release

Lexington County, S.C. (June 6, 2015) - A late rally fell just short for the Lexington County Blowfish, as they fell to the Asheboro Copperheads 3-2 on Saturday, celebrating Military Appreciation Night.

In front of a sellout crowd of 2,573 fans, including over 1,300 soldiers serving out of Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., the Blowfish partially erased a 3-0 Copperheads lead. That lead was put momentarily in doubt by a late-inning rally.

Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double down the right field line. Sly Edwards (Charleston Southern), who reached on a walk, attempted to steal second with Duty standing on third base. Copperheads catcher Luke Horanski threw off line, allowing Duty to score easily from third.

An RBI groundout by Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) at the top of the order easily scored Edwards from third to cut the Copperheads deficit to 3-2.

Copperheads closer Micah Wells would stymie the rally, racking up three consecutive strikeouts to pick up the save, and preserve the anxious lead. Asheboro has extended its winning streak to five games in a row. During this streak, the three-run output was the lowest.

Rally aside, the Blowfish's bats were held in check all night long by Copperheads starter Austin Staley. Double plays ended the first and fourth innings, erasing potential offensive opportunities. Edwards was also caught trying to score from third base in the third inning on a groundout by J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion).

Asheboro would strike first in this game. Back-to-back hits from Will Albertson and the pesky Quincy Quintero would set up a two-run single from Kyle Hamner in the second inning. Charlie Barnes (Clemson) got the loss in his first start in a Blowfish uniform, allowing three runs on six hits through five innings of work.

The third run came home due to a defensive miscue to start. Ryan Mincher reached on a fielding error. One single got him over, and the second, off the bat of Skyler Geissinger, would get him in. However, Jack Crittenberger was denied a chance to score on that hit thanks in part to a cannon throw from right field by Connor Owings (Coastal Carolina).

Next up for the Blowfish is a three-game set with the Florence Redwolves, starting with a game on the road at 6:05 p.m. A live radio broadcast is available on Z93.1 FM The Lake, and on the Blowfish Baseball mobile app, starting at 5:45 p.m.

The Blowfish return home on Monday to take on the Florence Redwolves. Tickets are available by visiting the Blowfish website at blowfishbaseball.com, calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, and at Blowfish On Main at 101 East Main Street in Lexington.
