Sharks Score Nine in Seventh, Win 12-8

June 11, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Edenton Steamers (9-3) came into Wilmington feeling unstoppable. Offensively, they were atop the Coastal Plain League in a majority of the categories on the offensive leader boards. Their .271 batting average was tops, as was their 74 runs scored and 62 RBIs. Nobody in the league had more hits than Orlando Olivera's 16, and his talents were on display.

Olivera approached the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning. With a single swing of the bat, Olivera gave his team an early 4-0 lead after launching a John Parke fastball over the right-center field wall. After a quick run in the second, the Steamers found themselves up 5-0.

After giving up two more runs in the 4th, John Parke's debut for the Sharks was ended early. Parke finished the night surrendering a total of seven runs on six hits, walking one and striking out one. Things were looking bleak for the home team.

The Sharks were able to blood in the bottom of the frame, posting two runs. Newcomer Mike Montville doubled to score Nate Moorhouse from second base, who reached on a single and a stolen base. Joe DeVito doubled, causing Montville and DeVito to trade places, putting the score at 5-2. With blood in the water and a taste of the Clams, the Sharks were still hungry.

Edenton flashed a new arm at Wilmington in the 7th, and Zach Eden struggled from the get-go. Montville caught the first pitch on the helmet, becoming the first of four hit batsmen in the inning. Eden was replaced by Jerry Stuckey, who had control issues of his own. Between the hit batters, the free passes issued on balls, and the four hits added in the inning by Wilmington, the Sharks hang nine runs in the 7th, going ahead 12-8.

The bullpen continued to shine for the Sharks Wednesday night. In relief of Parke, Ryan Manore and Will Shepley combined for four innings, giving up 5 hits, and a run.

With the 12-8 lead approaching the 9th, the Sharks routinely invited Kyler Stout to close things out. In his sixth appearance on the season, Stout allowed one hit and one walk, keeping his ERA at a pristine 0.00 on the year.

The Sharks travel to Wilson (7-6) Thursday for a date with the Tobacconists, before returning to Buck Hardee Field to entertain the Morehead City Marlins (1-12).
