FOREST CITY - The Forest City Owls defeated the Copperheads Wednesday night 3-0 in Asheboro.
The Copperheads had runners at the corners with two outs when a huge storm struck and the game was called after a 25 minute rain delay.
Forest City (7-7) led 2-0 early in the game after an RBI double from Tony DiMartino and an RBI single from Maleeke Gibson in the second inning.
Gibson then singled in a run in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.
Tyler Zuber, in his first start this year went five 2/3 innings allowing no runs on seven hits, and struck out eight hitters.
The Copperheads threatened in the third with runners at the corners before Zuber struck out Marks to end the inning.
Matthew Gorst lasted five innings and took his first loss of the year allowing two runs on three hits for the Copperheads. Gorst also walked three batters and struck out seven.
With a win tonight, the Owls will get to .500 on the year.
Forest City will return home to play the Columbia Blowfish tomorrow night at McNair Field.
The Owls will continue the 2014 season at home on tomorrow night as they take on Columbia at 7:30. Fans can purchase season tickets, 1/2 season plans and 5-game Fireworks plans by calling the Owls office at 828-245-0000. Key dates for the 2014 season include: Fireworks Games on Saturday July 5th and Saturday August 2nd. Single game tickets are on sale now. The Owls will also take on the Chinese Taipei National team on July 7th.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 of those - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
