Corpus Christi Sharks News Release
The Corpus Christi Sharks announced today that they have resigned fan favorite, WR - David "Primo" Gaytan and QB - Fran Johnson for the 2008 season.
Last season Gaytan became the teams first International Player when he joined the Sharks from the American Puebla Football Club in . Often referred to as "Rudy" (a reference to Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's inspirational football career at Notre Dame), Gaytan quickly won the hearts of the coaching staff, teammates, and fans alike for his hustle and desire to play anywhere at anytime. Despite standing just 5'7" and 170 lbs, Gaytan demonstrated his versatility playing Wide Receiver, Defensive Back, and Kicker. "David really brings a spark to the team - his attitude and work ethic make him a popular teammate on and off the field", said Sharks Head Coach Mike Trigg. "The league allows each team to carry one International Player and we're pleased to have David back in South Texas ."
Johnson was well on his way to establishing himself as the Sharks starting Quarterback last season until he was sidelined by a fractured ankle. At 6"4", 222 lbs, Johnson has good size and agility. He earned the nickname "Gunslinger" as a 3-year starter at Benedictine College where he ranks as the schools all-time leader in Total Offense (6,021yds), Passing Yards (5,543yds), Completions (465), and Passing Attempts (848). "Fran has a strong arm and good pocket presence", said Trigg. "He certainly can make a lot of things happen for us". Johnson is expected to compete for the starting QB job this season.
Last year, in their inaugural season, the Sharks rallied to go 5-3 in their final eight games winning four straight and just missing the post season by one game. The Sharks are now gearing up for their second season in the highly competitive AF2 and Head Coach Mike Trigg is anxious to get started. Trigg says, "With the decision to fold NFL Europe, the AFL, and AF2 now have even bigger roles in developing players for the NFL. You are going to see a huge influx of talent this season".
