Sharks Launch Three Home Runs, Down Marlins 9-3

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (8-5) launched three home runs en route to a 9-3 defeat of the Morehead City Marlins (3-11) on a soggy Tuesday night at Big Rock Stadium.

Mike Frank (1-2) earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out six.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when the Sharks loaded the bases with just one out, and Grayson Atwood launched a grand slam in just his second at-bat of the season making the score 4-0. Two batters later, Alex Freedman launched his first dinger of the year, a solo shot to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Sharks.

The Marlins answered back in the fifth inning when Drew Woodall and Chad Shannon singled before Geoff DeGroot and Ryan Cranmer laced back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 5-2 game. However, the Sharks added three runs sixth inning when they led off the inning with three singles and Freedman hit a sacrifice fly. Cole McInturff followed by driving in two runs to extend the Wilmington lead to 8-2.

Then in the seventh inning, the Sharks tacked on another run on a solo homer by Lloyd Enzor before the Marlins added their third run of the night on Cranmer's third home run of the season, making the score 9-3.

Steve Landell (0-2) took the loss in his shortest outing of the year, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings. Dario Santangelo made his 2012 Marlins debut, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Offensively, Cranmer finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Shannon and Woodall each singled and scored.

The Marlins are back are the road tomorrow night as they travel to take on the Peninsula Pilots for the second time in three days. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The game was delayed for 16 minutes in the top of the ninth because of rain... A.J. Goetz did not allow a hit in one inning of work, marking his sixth hitless outing of the season... Chace Mitchell made his Marlins debut, entering for Corey Bass in the eighth inning.
