Yarbrough Leads List of 79 CPL Alums Taken in 2012 MLB Draft

June 12, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) News Release

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Plain League announced Friday that 79 players, both former and players signed for the 2012 season were selected during the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Alex Yarbrough, a former Thomasville HiToms player in 2010, highlighted this year's CPL draft class after hearing his name called in the fourth round, 147th overall to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. A total of 16 CPL players were taken in the first 10 rounds of this year's draft. With this year's draft class, the CPL has now had over 1,000 alums taken in the draft since its inception in 1997, and has averaged at least 100 draftees a year over the last five years.

All of the CPL's current 14 clubs had a player taken in the 2012 draft. The Peninsula Pilots and Thomasville HiToms led the way with each having 13 former and current players selected. Edenton was next with seven, while Florence and Morehead City each tallied six apiece. Fayetteville and Forest City each saw five alums taken, followed by four teams - Columbia, Gastonia, Wilmington and Wilson - each with four alums selected. Next were Asheboro, Martinsville and Petersburg with three apiece, while former franchise Outer Banks had two alums taken.
