JACKSONVILLE - The 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks and the Arena Football League announced Tuesday that Jacksonville defensive lineman Jerry Turner has been selected as the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2013 season.

Turner earned this award with a dominant performance in the Sharks' 61-35 defeat of the Pittsburgh Power last Friday night. Turner was a presence in the Power backfield from the beginning of the game, as he brought down Pittsburgh quarterback Jordan Jefferson on the Power's first offensive possession. On the final play of the quarter, Turner pounced on a fumble to set the Sharks' offense up with a first-and-goal situation.

In all, Turner racked up 4.5 total tackles (three solo), three sacks and a fumble recovery in the team's Week 2 contest. Those three sacks tied a franchise single-game record, as Turner matched a mark set by Jason Holman during the 2011 season.

Throughout the league, perhaps no defensive lineman is off to a faster start than Turner, who through two games has at least twice as many sacks (4.0) as any other player in the League. The most experienced player on the Jacksonville roster, Turner is in his seventh AFL season and first in Jacksonville. The Tennessee Tech product is a native of Birmingham, Alabama.

Turner becomes the first Shark player to win a weekly League award during the 2013 season.
